NESTEC will be attending the USIPA (U.S. Industrial Pellet Association) conference on October 25-27, 2021.
We hope to see you there!
2021 Conference (theusipa.org)
NESTEC has installed eleven (11) complete air emission control systems (RTOs, RCOs, WESPs, including the process exhaust collection and control systems in the past two (2) years for the wood pellet industry. The systems were installed for control on the rotary dryer exhaust and/or pellet hammer and pellet cooler processes in MS, LA, GA.
Two (2) other systems are presently being engineered and will be installed in TX.

A typical total process duct collection system from the hammer mills and pellet coolers is shown below. The process exhaust is controlled through two (2) parallel identical NESTEC MCC RCO units with a single exhaust stack.

Typical Pellet Plant air emissions control system:

Pellet plant air emissions vary based on the supplied wood moisture content, dryer design, pelletizer design, and the wood type:
- Saw dust and/or other wood waste
- Green wood
- Southern pine
- Hard wood
- Or a mixture
The mixture’s approximate hardwood versus softwood makeup and associated emission levels are shown below and have a direct effect on the VOC and HAP emission levels.
For example:
- The VOCs emissions exceed 250 tons per year at approximately 57% softwood and 43% hardwood.
- The HAPs emissions exceed 25 tons per year at approximately 37% softwood and 63% hardwood.
- The major HAPs are:
- Acetaldehyde
- Acrolein
- Benzaldehyde
- Formaldehyde
- Methanol
- Propionaldehyde
- Phenol
- The major HAPs are:
In this case, as can be seen from the graph below, HAPs are the greater controlling factor in establishing air emission control requirements.
The following graph shows the associated emissions for a mixture of hard and softwood for 0 to 100% each, based on EPA PB data:
